The head of the World Health Organization (WHO) has called on the countries affected by rapidly increasing infections to take action. “Too many countries are on a dangerous path,” Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said today in Geneva. “We are at a critical point, especially in the northern hemisphere. The coming months will be very difficult.” He called on governments to take immediate new measures to prevent further deaths and to save health services from collapsing.
If governments rigorously tracked contacts and isolated infected persons and quarantined their contacts, curfews could still be avoided. But countries must also make it easy for people to comply with quarantine regulations. Support is needed for individuals and families.
Tedros appealed to those countries where the number of new infections, hospital admissions and intensive care unit occupancy rates are rising sharply to adapt existing measures as quickly as possible. “Enforcing such adjustments when they are necessary is a sign of leadership,” he said.
